Our assignment, after reading it, was to choose ten songs that we felt went with the book in any way. And part of it was to make a creative title page.
Here is what I have on the assignment (if you want to year the songs just copy the title to youtube and you can listen to it):
1. Chillingworth--> Hornen I Pannan (Horns on his forehead) by Nanne Gronvall
My reasoning: The song mostly talks about someone who is evil (horns growing from their head like the devil) and they are not ashamed to admit it, very much like how Mr. Chillingworth is. He naturally keeps it from society, but he doesn’t hesitate to tell Hester how he feels toward Arthur. And he tells her what his goal was as the Reverend’s physician. To get his revenge.
2. Hester Prynne--> Om Du Var Min (If You Were Mine) by Nanne Gronvall
My reasoning: Despite all that has happened with breaking the law and such Hester had loved Arthur the whole time. She silently watched him while she slowly adjusted to living life with the Scarlet Letter. She wanted to be with him without having to deal with shame.
3. Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale --> Secret Lovers by Atlantic Starr
My reasoning: In Boston Massachusetts it was considered illegal to be with someone who was not your spouse, so for the longest time Hester and Arthur kept their love a secret. But they still harbor feelings for each other.
4. Arthur Dimesdale--> This Night by Black Lab
My reasoning: Arthur knows he’s committed a sin when he was with Hester Prynne. For the last 7 years of his life he had tortured himself both mentally and physically as his way of trying to, so to speak, EARN his forgiveness from heaven. He quite possibly thought that, in this way, he could let his soul become peaceful despite the heinous sin that was committed with his participation.
5. Any thought monologue by either Hester or Arthur --> Farewell to Music by O'Carolan, a 16th century Irish composer
My reasoning: In an artistic point of view, this song would suit well for any parts of the book where Hester Prynne or Arthur Dimmesdale were thinking about their sin, where it has the negative feel to it.
6. The short moment between when Arthur, Hester and Pearl ascended the scaffold together the final time; what both the adults know what’s going to happen in the future --> Happy Ending by MIKA
My reasoning: The two who are in love know that they cannot live together; both feel that is the punishment for their sin. They could not live together without continuing to lie to others and giving up the lives they had.
7. Pearl growing up without her father --> No Daddy by Teairra Mari
My reasoning: Growing up, until she was seven years old, Pearl had no father to speak of. The only thing she knew was only having a mother. In the song it talks about why the girl was ‘messed up’ and “wild”; she had no father to help her get through the hard times she felt she had gone through.
8. Hester Prynne at the beginning of living life with her punishment --> Does Anybody Hear Her by Casting Crowns
My reasoning: Hester had committed what was considered an unforgivable sin in Puritan society – Adultery. Because she was a woman she was spared the usual penalty, which was death. But she was not spared the public humiliation and scorn she had to live through as she stood on the scaffold and wore the Scarlet Letter.
While she is enduring all this, however, there is someone else who is suffering just as much from the same thing…
(When I get more songs I will update this until it is finished. Enjoy! ^^)
